fly over art - the book

fly over art was a regional art tumblr (inactive since Dec. 2013) featuring the work of artists who are either originally from or primary based in the Midwestern United States. Each post featured one artist with examples of their work and a link to their portfolio website and other links as well as a location. Artists range from well known contemporary stars like Amy Sillman to lesser known and still emerging talents like Zora Murff. The blog features full internal directories, allowing visitors to search artists by state, city and medium. At its height fly over art had roughly 74,000 followers on tumblr.

Sister blogs also include beyond 9th avenue (Northeast), in the new frontier (West) and dim with beauty (South).

fly over art the book would essentially be the same concept but in print form. Each entry could feature a few pages of the artist’s work in addition to a biography page giving information about the artist’s background, possibly even a write up about their work from a contributing art critic. The front section of the book could feature a map of the Midwest, listing which pages feature artists from each state as well has having dots on the map for every city represented in the book. Sections would be organized alphabetically by state. The back would feature a full directory index.

In her work ‘Portable City’, artist Yin Xiuzhen collects clothes worn by people in different cities and uses them to create miniature models inside a suitcase. The suitcase also plays a tape with the local soundscape.
